AI Conversational Models: Adapting, Not Learning

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning have made significant strides, enabling models like OpenAI's GPT-4 to simulate impressively natural conversations. However, there are misconceptions to clarify and fascinating facets to explore, especially around the term "adapt".





The Illusion of Adaptation

When we say that GPT-4 "adapts" to the context of a conversation, it doesn't imply that the model is learning or changing over time. Instead, these models use the context of a conversation — the sequence of preceding exchanges — to generate relevant responses.

The process starts with an input to the model. This input is transformed into a vector, numerical representation that the machine can understand. The model then uses its algorithm to process this vector and generate a response vector. Finally, this response vector is decoded back into human-readable text.


In conversations with multiple exchanges, the model processes previous inputs into vectors and includes them in the context. This context is then used to generate a response. Thus, while the model seems to "adapt" its responses to the conversation, it's merely a feature of its design, not a learning process or a change in the algorithm.

Once a conversation is over, the model does not retain any information from it. Each new conversation starts from a blank slate, ensuring the privacy of each interaction and allowing the AI to approach each new conversation without bias from previous ones.


The Power of Context

The AI's ability to consider the context of a conversation is crucial for generating meaningful and relevant responses. For instance, in a conversation about movies, when you ask, "Who is the leading actor in it?" after discussing the movie "Inception", the AI understands that "it" refers to "Inception." The AI uses the context provided by the previous exchange to generate a suitable response, such as "The leading actor in 'Inception' is Leonardo DiCaprio."

This context awareness is precious in complex conversations, where understanding the situation or the subject matter depends on multiple previous exchanges. It allows the model to generate answers that are sensible in isolation and coherent and relevant to the ongoing conversation.


Despite this, it's important to remember that models like GPT-4 don't have a long-term memory or the ability to understand context beyond the current conversation. Each conversation is treated independently, and the model doesn't learn or retain information from one conversation to the next.


The Significance of the Knowledge Cutoff

When interacting with AI models, it's essential to understand the concept of a "knowledge cutoff". For GPT-4, this cutoff is in September 2021, which means the information and knowledge the model possesses are only up-to-date until then. The model was trained on a dataset with information available up until that date. After training, the model doesn't continue to learn or update its knowledge.

This "knowledge cutoff" indicates that the model might not have information about recent events, scientific discoveries, new books or movies, etc., post-September 2021. For the most accurate and recent information, it's always advisable to check the latest reliable sources.


Final Thoughts

AI conversational models like GPT-4 don't learn or adapt in the traditional sense. Instead, they utilize the context of a conversation to generate relevant responses, starting afresh with each new conversation. By understanding how these models operate, we can better appreciate their capabilities and limitations, and write targeted prompts that maximize the quality and relevance of their responses.
